check your sugarcoat at the door

Filed under: as a mama, kiddo

Yesterday Kiddo came running to me from the living room, in a Stage 5 panic. She grabbed my forearm with both hands, little fingers with chipped black polish at the nails pushing into my skin. “I SWALLOWED MY GUM.”

In the second before reacting, I wanted to widen my eyes, gasp incredulously and see her expression when she believed, for a moment, all of the horrible things kids say will happen when you swallow your gum. How it stays in your system for seven years. How you have to go to the hospital to have it removed. Then I remembered how I had relinquished all of my evil eight years ago when Kiddo was born.

“It’s totally fine.”

“Oh. It is?”

Utter relief. And then, “Can I have a piece of cheese?”

I can only wish my fears were quashed so quickly.

Love it. And man life would be so much more fun if I too could let go of fear so easily.
